Canadian born singer/songwriter Marvin Lorne, has been living and performing in Australia for more than twenty years and is widely acclaimed for his finger picking and slide on six and twelve stringed guitars as well as high energy blues and alternative country ballads. Before moving to Castlemaine in 1998, Marvin was a constant presence since the early 80’s in the Melbourne blues and acoustic scenes. His band Boogie 2 Shoes featured on Volume 1 of Real Australian Blues and he is certainly no stranger to 3RRR, 3PBS, 3CR and ABC radio, and has appeared many times live to air on these and many country stations. There have been numerous festival appearances over the years as well, either solo or in a variety of duo’s, trio’s and bands, (Port Fairy, Maldon, Melbourne Blues and Frankston Guitar Festivals to name a few.) He was first inspired by the Blues revival of the 60’s, Leo Kottke then more recently Keb’ Mo’, Steve Earl and Lyle Lovette. His original material has been strongly influenced by all of these, and many others in styles ranging from ragtime and hillbilly mountain music, cajun and country, to raw twelve bar blues. There’s often a bottle neck on his finger and some songs don’t even have words.

In 2004 Marvin independently released his debut solo album “This is Man’s work”. It showcases thirteen original tracks, moving between blues, in a handful of shades in Marvin’s distinctive hand, and alternative country ballads…tunes sometimes haunting, sometimes humorous…sometimes something uniquely personal…forty years love affair with guitar in its many sounds and styles so closely linked to his poetry…some cheeky…some cut close to the bone. By far the most dominant theme in Marvin’s writing is the search for meaning and understanding in his relationships with the people closest to him. Parents, wives, lovers, children, friends. All get a mention in these songs The sincerity prevails and it seems fitting to group these songs in all their variety under the banner “This is Man’s Work”

Independant Reviews of This is Man's Work

Castlemaine based Marvin Lorne recorded this album last year. It's taken a long time coming to the surface, but there are peices of gold to be found here. Lorne brings to the acoustic blues an easy confidence and imbues it with an earthy warm vocal style. The album opens with a slide reaching for the stars then falling to earth — melancholy mixing with the dirt floor. The acoustic work, with the double bass interplay, draws a line back to English legend Davey Graham. In this context the electric numbers seem a little out of place. But a minor quibble for a little treasure.

Canadian born singer/songwriter Marvin Lorne is now living in AUstralia-you may remember him from Boogie 2 Shoes and also quite a few other CD's. This CD is not solely blues, it has some folk and country influences as well. A nice CD, some haunting tunes and some good blues. What more could you ask for.
